Day 55 - South Baymouth to Lion's Head

59.0 km - Total so far 4,671.03 km -  http://ridewithgps.com/trips/5752298

We left the campground pretty early so that we could get a good spot in the line up for the ferry. Turns out bicycles don't line up as you just up to the head of the line on the side walk. Next time, Hélène wants us to sleep in later. We had beakfast in South Baymouth. In most places we have been you can get a fancy dinner for two for what we paid for breakfast and it was so so. Hélène explained to the owner that what she was served as french toast wasn't really the way french toast is made but he did not seem to be thankful for the info. Go figure!

We had coffee on the ferry and to our surprise it was reasonably priced. We also chatted with a young lady cyclist who is going around and touching the Great Lakes vice cycling along the shores. Not nearly as long a ride but a challenge nevertheless. She told us she had limited cycling experience before starting her trip in Michigan and we figure she will be pretty hardcore by the time she is done. She has already cycled Hwy #17 from Wawa to Sault Ste-Marie which is a pretty demanding 200 km. Today was not for the casual cyclist.

Who do you think got off the boat first, the motorcycles, the truck or the cyclist? Answer next Sunday

No handbrake to set so we had to tie the bikes to the boat

A obligatory picture of the South Baymouth lighthouse

A tight squeeze but we made it through

It was the first time since Day 11 Golden to Lake Louise that we wore all of our rain gear. It rained from the time we left the ferry to when we pulled into the information center in Ferndale 50 km later. The riding conditions could not have been more fun; a head wind, in the rain and uphill most of the way. One can only dream of such conditions. What motivated us is that we decided to stay in a motel this evening and dry everything. At the information center, we were told that motels had no vacancy but that we could get a cottage at the only motel in Lion's Head. When we got to the motel, there was a change in the price offered to us for the cottage and we were asked how much we were willing to pay for the cottage. This left us with a pretty bad taste and we opted for the campground instead. We won't be able to dry as we would have in a motel/cottage but we feel better about where we spend our money.

It's not raining anymore, BTW those are juice cans on the table

36.66 miles - Total so far 2,902.44 miles

  1. My guess is that the bikes are the first one out of the boat. Funny looking can of juices :-)

  2. Did the ferry company supply the tie-down bungee cords or did you have to supply your own?

    Barley juice on the table?

    1. The ferry supplied the tie down ropes used by us and the motorcyclists

    2. Ah, good. You two are superbly organized but packing along tie-down ropes to secure your fully loaded bikes would have been too much. My mind boggles at attempting to calculate the tie-downs required for Dan's bike loaded down with a full hydration supply.
