Day 43 - Marathon to White River

98.6 km - Total so far 3,917.93 kmhttp://ridewithgps.com/trips/5540899

We left Marathon at 07:45 am on route to White River, 95 km away. Marathon is relatively close to Lake Superior and although it is July 5th, we experienced what had to be one of the coldest morning of the entire trip. We could see our breath as we pedaled the 6 km from the campsite back to Hwy 17.
A picture of the bear I spotted yesterday
The way we like our hills with a 'nice S curve in them' so much fun
Our first stop was the tourist information/former ski hill that was recommendded to us by Glen, the OPP constable. We were expecting to see out to Lake Superior but instead we saw the hills and forest surrounding Marathon. The tourist information building appears to be the former club house of the ski hill. We were amazed at the circumference of the old growth trees used as part of the construction. A few pictures and off we were.

The view close to the tourist information office. Hills and trees as far as the eye can see
There was practically no sign of human life when all of a sudden we came upon the Barrick's David Bell Mine. The place is huge as you can see in the pictures below. There were up to three mines in operation but this mine is the only one that remains.

A small portion of White Lake
Farther down the road, I spotted a cavern and we had to stop to take a few pictures. There was quite a bit of water so our exploration was pretty limited. We posted a short video of what we saw. We thought nothing is gonna surpass that for excitement. That is when we stumbled onto the huge display at the intersection of Hwy 17 and Hwy 614 put up by the town of Manitouwadge. We spent quite a bit of time crawling over the machinery.
A great big hole that was not man made
Huge mine equipment

Everything is big in Northern Ontario
The black flies and mosquitos are driving him crazy
We had a nice ride to White River except for one thing, the bugs. We could not stop for more that 5 minutes on the side of the road without being attacked by black flies and mosquitoes. We had oranges to snack on but could not as they took too long to peel.

We finally made it to White River at a respectable 3 pm.

Pauline, the wine was indeed a Yellow Tail, Merlot...good eye!

A video was added to Day 42, go check it out.

  1. Small towns but all very interesting. The David Bell mine is a GOLD mine, I guess they don't allow visitors, that would have been pretty neat to visit.
